Master in Digital Fabrication for Advanced Architectural Design *

* Enseñanzas conducentes a la obtención de otros títulos a que se refiere el art. 34.1 in fine de la Ley 6/2001, de 21 de diciembre, Orgánica de Universidades, que no conducen a la obtención de un título con valor oficial (art. 4 Decreto 84/2004, de 13 de mayo).

Program

FIRST YEAR. CEU SAN PABLO: ADVANCE DIPLOMA IN DIGITAL FABRICATION.

M1. FREEFORM MODELING

ADVANCED GEOMETRY, 3 ECTS. Drawing complex geometries, advanced modeling techniques, surface analysis, export and import models to and from different file formats. Orthogonal and oblique axonometric views of the model. Perspective viewpoint. Geometric restitution of perspective. Photogrammetry: applications. Practical exercises related to architectural design.
DIGITAL TOOLS 1: 3D PRINTER, 3 ECTS. To produce final architectural models, print prototypes that are used, later on, for replication via molding and casting, analyze structures in architectural designs by printing different iterations of node points -complex joints between columns- to analyze the assembly of geometries.

M2.COMPUTER CONTROLLED CUTTING

ADVANCED CAD, 3 ECTS. To acquire understanding, analysis and description of Architecture using graphic strategies that allows its own proposition and intentional communication; acquire knowledge of analysis and synthesis of general organizational systems of architecture and the environment.
DIGITAL TOOLS 2: LASER CUTTER, 3 ECTS. Construction of a press-fit model, starting from the use of 2D modeling software, that allows designing the structure before cutting the parts using a laser cutter to finally manufacture and assemble an expandable model with compatible and interchangeable joints that allowed different configurations.

M3. DESIGN & MAKE

PARAMETRIC DESIGN, 3 ECTS. Being Maths the base of the parametric world, the course focuses on design with equations, mathematical games (game of live), tessellations, genetic algorithms, animations, loops and fractals using Rhinoceros 3D (modeling; software), Grasshopper (parametric design software) and Hoopsnake (Grasshopper Plugin).
DIGITAL TOOLS 3: CNC MACHINE, 3 ECTS. Design and build a temporary wooden pavilion, to optimize design and manufacturing through the application of parametric design techniques and cutting CNC (Computer Numerical Control). Using wood as a construction element and structural explore the creation of experimental architectural spaces, test complex geometries and pursue creative solutions within the framework of innovation.
M4. BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING
BIM, 6 ECTS. Based on the constructive character of BIM (Building Information Modeling) programs, the aim is to develope an architectural design, starting by importing an Autocad document, using all necessary tools: preparing levels and grids, creating and manipulating walls, doors, ceilings, stairs, roofs and other components needed in the model. Besides, introduce dimensions and label plans and create schedules, room schedules and legends. Finally, generate the final sheets with 3D images, controlling the camera and rendering the design.

M5. GRAPHICS & DESIGN 

GRAPHICS, 3 ECTS. The course is focused in developing 3D architectural perspectives in Photoshop, based on images of design models made by students, creating photomontages and learning new techniques and styles. Besides, a final presentation of the design using Illustrator will be created and new ways of using Illustrator as a design tool will be explored.
DIGITAL TOOLS 4: VINYL CUTTER, 3 ECTS. Vinyl cutter will be used for making paper folding models starting from a design created in Illustrator as well as a tool for analyzing complex geometries. Also, some techniques for graphic design will be taught in order to produce graphics for the exhibition of the work developed during the first semester.
M6. DIGITAL ARTS & CRAFTS
ARTS & CRAFTS, 3 ECTS. To explore the connections between technology and artisanal handicraft to apply to interior design and architecture. To design and fabricate furniture with plywood analyzing complex frame joints; after designing though parametrical software, all the parts will be cut using the CNC milling machine. Explore ceramic bricks made with a 3D printer machine.
DIGITAL TOOLS 5: MOLDING AND CASTING, 3 ECTS. To design a 3D mold, machine it and cast parts from it. Apply molding and casting techniques to architectural models and scale 1 to 1 prototypes. Explore new construction materials analyzing their behavior in different conditions.

M7. INTERACTION DESIGN

ELECTRONICS, 6 ECTS. To design interactive architectural prototypes that could react to environmental changes; develop prototypes as, for example, reactive roofs or light responsive facades to learn how to work with electronics (sensors, servos, leds and so on).
M8. STRUCTURE & DESIGN
STRUCTURAL DIMENSIONING, 3 ECTS. To carry out the analysis and design of reinforced concrete and steel structures, subject to horizontal and vertical forces for a civil work projects through a software that allows maximum analysis reliability and the best drawing design.
STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS, 3 ECTS. To explore through architectural models different structural typologies analyzing their responses to dynamic actions; to focus on the practical implementation and determination of highest standards of efficiency of seismic advanced con-trol devices (base isolation, tuned mass dampers, friction pendulum bearing, simple roller bearing or fluid, metallic or viscoelastic dampers, among others).

M9. SCANNING ARCHITECTURE

DIGITAL RESTORATION, 3 ECTS. To use photogrammetry, terrestrial laser scanning, georadar and thermography for archaeology and architectural restoration. Students will work with archeologist and architects to apply new technologies in the field of architectural heritage.
DIGITAL TOOLS 6: 3D SCANNING, 3 ECTS. To explore the application of this technology on design processes and graphical representation. After the construction of freeform physical models using crafting materials different techniques of 3D scanning are used to go from the physical model to a virtual model that could be edited in computer aided design software allowing to represent space through formal manipulation in a creative, flexible and spontaneous but at the same time controlled and rigorous way.

M10. ARCHITECTURAL LAYOUT

ANIMATION, 3 ECTS. To provide graphic level and visual impact to the work developed by students during the academic year to explain them in a illustrative, efficient, easy and attractive manner, taking advantage of the graphic techniques provided by architectural software.
VISUAL MEDIA IDENTITY, 3 ECTS. To explore the design principles of contemporary media while learning valuable traditional skills and gain a broad and distinctive range of visual languages working with animation, computing, photography and printmaking to create a portfolio including all the works developed during the year.

SECOND YEAR. TUNGHAI. MASTER IN ADVANCED ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN

M11. DESIGN I

DESIGN RESEARCH PROJECT, 4 ECTS. Advanced design studio divided in three parts. The first part is related to international competition projects, which normally takes place within one-month period in the beginning of the semester. The second part will be a three months design studio project, which will cover issues of digital analysis of spatial structure and social outcomes, digital design and tectonic constructions, users body experience in both macro and micro environmental levels, and finally the sustainability issue of building performance and design strategies, etc. The last part is scheduled in the last two weeks of the semester and it will be an out reach exhibition project, which will display all students’ design works from the second part of the design studio project.
EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN STUDIO, 6 ECTS. Putting emphasis on strong collaboration with renowned local architects to carry out architecture or urban design projects has been defined as the main training principles of this advanced design studio per se. This studio will be designed to explore two fundamental issues focusing on critical regionalism characterized with local grass rooted strategies and/or material tectonic practice. The aim of this studio is to bring students to stay with local inhabitants to tease out real local development issues and to propose possible creative design schemes as references for needs of local development.

M12. URBAN I

ASIAN MODERN CITY PLANNING AND RESEARCH, 2 ECTS. This module aims to provide an inclusive Asian urbanism framework to the understanding of urban design and environmental form. It is useful not only for the explanation of historical roots and representation of urbanism and heritage of the contemporary, but also for meaningful spatial interventions in the future. Module objectives include to learn to deepen thoughts involving inclusive Asian city origin(s) and analytical; to articulate Taiwanese Sustainable Urbanism and stay connected to an Asia-focused pedagogy that apply in the local context; and to formulate their own syncretic morphological framework for conducting independent studies centered on Vertical Asian Cities. This may also include architectural and urban history, bio mimicry system design and environmentally sustainable related urbanism and cultural-ecological development on proto-typing for future vernacular architecture.

M 13. DIGITAL I

PARAMETRIC DESIGN AND PERFORMATIVE ARCHITECTURE, 2 ECTS. Parameterization has become a key approach for contemporary architectural design. A parametric model enhances not only the efficiency of design process but also the performance of design by its variability and comparability. Furthermore, the digital continuity from digital modeling data to physical fabrication data helps realization of computational forms and ideas. This course will explore the possibility how this parametric thinking and making process can inspire architectural form and structure for better performance. 
DIGITAL ANALYSIS: THROUGH SPACE SYNTAX, 2 ECTS. This lecture focuses on professional analytical technique training through the Space Syntax Approach, which differs from the existing real materials tectonic creation and instead asserts the important aspects of immaterial spatial architecture bearing with unique features of void space tectonic exploration. The strength of this methodology either in research issues or in the creative design research area relies on the fact that it can interpret qualitative elements through quantitative representations with evidence based scientific knowledge. It does cope with the departmental training goals of ability of in depth research on spatial problems and creative way of solution assessing by deploying digital and parametric tools in the architectural and urban design fields.

M14. DESIGN II

ADVANCED DESIGN STUDIO, 6 ECTS. This is a special design studio based on international workshop and preferably to be carried out abroad if budget allows. If budget is insufficient then the studio will proceed in domestic places in collaboration with invited foreign prestigious architects (or renowned design tutors) and foreign postgraduate students from other countries. This design research project will normally take place in a two-week period in summer vacation or winter vacation within the school year calendar. It is organized to meet the fulfillment of international cross-cultural visions within the departmental curriculum training objectives.
SEMINAR ON THESIS DESIGN, 3 ECTS. This lecture focuses on how to integrate with all design projects produced from the whole year training process. The outcome of this design thesis of each individual student should meet the following requirements in order to receive his or her master in advanced architecture degree from the school. Four items for assessment are: the original creative discourse of each design project, the artistic expression of the project work, the technical achievement of the design process, and finally the integrity and completeness of the thesis work, etc. Outstanding thesis works could be included in later publication of student’s performance of that year.

M15. URBAN II

URBAN DESIGN AND RESEARCH METHOD, 2 ECTS. To demystify science, particularly tailored for architectural graduate students engaging in doing science in all aspects of urban design studies. To that aim it is planned: to introduce theoretical foundations to increase understanding of philosophies of science, to apply urban design elements in spatial and artistic articulation and relate to research, to prepare students’ abilities to conduct urban design and environmental studies in research

M 16. TECTONIC

STUDY ON CONSTRUCTION OF CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE, 3 ECTS. This course is focused on the tectonic studying and thinking the construction and detail design of Masters’ works of Modern architecture. The discussion in this class would thus go beyond the technical consideration about material and size. Tectonic thinking covers ideas on time and space, such as contended by Sigfried Gidieon. Or we may say it is concerned with the idea of time and space. Luis Kahn makes distinction between form and design with the example of spoon. For him the form of spoon is constituted by scoop and handle, whereas the design of spoon may vary in material such as silver, porcelain or steel and in shape such as round or shallow. 

M17. THEORY

PHILOSOPHY OF ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN 2 ECTS. In order to meet the training objectives of critical thinking, dialectic discourse and international cross cultural visions within the departmental curriculum, this course intends to introduce several Philosophical paradigms on architectural theory to raise questions to students and requires them to present their critical ideas on this fundamental issue within the scope of dialectic philosophies on architectural design.
